International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) and General Insurance Council conduct a virtual meeting.


On 18th August 2021, IUMI organized a virtual meeting in which GI council officials and marine underwriters of member companies from India participated.

 Mr Richard Turner, President, Mr Lars Lange, Secretary-General and Ms Hendrike Kuhl, Policy Director, participated from the IUMI. The meeting was part of IUMI's initiative to reach out to member associations individually for intensive interaction. 

Emphasizing the importance of Asian markets and with particular reference to India, Mr Richard Turner gave a presentation on IUMI activities, including the education program, which was one of the most significant focuses of IUMI. Mr Lars Lange spoke on the importance of constant interaction with members to know and understand the different market realities and current issues.

 Mr MN Sarma, Secretary-General, General Insurance Council, spoke about the Indian market, the problems in the marine insurance sector, its low visibility because of volume and the impact of the pandemic on the Indian market. He requested IUMI executives to focus on improving the quality of marine surveyors also amongst other things. He thanked IUMI executives for making time for this interaction amid hectic activity for the forthcoming Seoul conference. 

 President IUMI, Mr Richard Turner, made three important announcements during the meeting

  1. IUMI has awarded a bursary of $ 8750 to Mr Roshan Kumar of New India Assurance for studying Marine insurance Law & Practice Postgraduate Diploma (PGDIP) at World Maritime University, Sweden ( Mr Roshan Kumar has topped IUMI's marine cargo tutorial exam with over 97% marks.
  2. Mr Sanjiv Singh of the General Insurance Council, a member of the Education Forum and Facts & Figures Committee of IUMI, has been nominated as Chairman of the IUMI Education Forum.IUMI will organize its IUMI-Asia Forum conference in India in 2022 if the Covid situation permits.
  3.  Mr Sibesh Sen of HDFC ERGO, a member of the IUMI Cargo Committee, gave a presentation on the Indian marine insurance market which was followed by a Q&A session.

It was a well-attended meeting with around thirty participants consisting of marine underwriters of the member companies, IUMI and Council officials.
